Eluama Development Union Worldwide: A Beacon of Unity, Growth, and Heritage
Eluama, Isuikwuato LGA, Abia State – June 2025
The Eluama Development Union Worldwide (EDU Worldwide), a symbol of progress and unity for the Eluama people, continues to leave an indelible mark on the socio-cultural and infrastructural development of the community. Established in 1970 through the merger of the Eluama Literate Youth Association and the Eluama Central Union, EDU has stood the test of time, championing the cause of community advancement in Eluama, a prominent town in Isuikwuato Local Government Area of Abia State.
A Vision Rooted in Community Service
From its founding, the Union was driven by the need to foster unity, peace, and comprehensive development in Eluama. Over the decades, EDU has spearheaded transformative projects in electricity, commerce, road infrastructure, water supply, education, healthcare, and other public amenities.
Organizational Structure and Global Reach
EDU operates through a robust structure, anchored by a central convention that meets three times a year — during Easter, the August Iriji Festival, and December. The union also maintains monthly meetings across its 18 global branches, which include:
Home Branch
Ahaba Branch
Umuahia Branch
Aba Branch
Port Harcourt Branch
Okigwe Branch
Owerri Branch
Lagos Branch
Abakaliki Branch
Abuja Branch
Kaduna Branch
Enugu Branch
Jos Branch
Kano Branch
North America Branch
South Africa Branch
West Coast Branch
United Kingdom Branch
Complementing its structure are vital governance arms such as the EDU Women’s Wing and Youth Wing, as well as development partners like the Eluama Elegant Daughters, Eluama Love Brothers Association, and Eluama Believers Association.
Legacy Projects and Community Impact
Among the landmark projects executed by EDU are:
Eluama Secondary School (started in 1977, completed in 1978)
Eluama Town Hall (started in 1972, commissioned in 1976 by Rev. Fr. Dr. Ifeanyi Anozia)
Electrification of the town
Eluama Health Centre
Ezumezu Centre
Eluama Post Office
Ahonta Market
The Annual Iriji Festival
Publication of “The Heritage of Eluama, Isuikwuato”, a book documenting the town’s rich cultural legacy
Governance and Evolution
Governance within EDU Worldwide is overseen by a President General, with the convention serving as the apex decision-making body. To date, over 13 individuals have held the prestigious office of President General since 1970. A formal record of these leaders is being compiled for historical reference.
In 2022, during the August convention, the union officially adopted the name Eluama Development Union Worldwide, symbolizing its global identity and commitment to the diaspora community.
A Global Symbol of Indigenous Development
Today, EDU Worldwide has transformed from a local initiative into a globally recognized community development platform. Its resilience, unity, and progressive spirit continue to inspire other indigenous groups across Nigeria and the diaspora.
As EDU Worldwide marches forward, it remains a beacon of self-help, communal strength, and cultural preservation — a legacy that began over five decades ago and continues to thrive today.
